Since Peter the Great founded St. Petersburg in 1703, and throughout its tumultuous history, music has been a constant companion to visitors and residents alike. The city has seen revolution, war, and famine, not to mention three name changes, with music providing solace during those difficult times. Today St. Petersburg is recognized as one of the music capitols of the world with its exceptional orchestras, venues and music of all genres. Pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy describes his feelings about this most musical of Russian cities: "It would be almost impossible to find the right words to describe the magic of St. Petersburg ?one has to be there and see its avenues, its river Neva, the Winter Palace and Kazan Cathedral. I'll never forget the impact of my first visit there in the 1950s and amazingly, subsequent visits astound me just as much ?such is the eternal beauty of the city. And of course the St. Petersburg Philharmonic and the Mariinsky don't need any endorsement. St. Petersburg has always been and for a long time will remain one of the musical capitals of the world."
